Vinyl plank or laminate?
Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof all the way through, so it's our usual pick for basements, bathrooms, mudrooms, and rentals. Laminate has a harder wear layer and often a more convincing wood look, but most laminate is water-resistant rather than waterproof. We'll match the product to the room.
Why the prep matters
Click floors float, so any dip or hump in the subfloor shows up as a soft spot or a joint that won't stay closed. We flatten the subfloor first and use the underlayment the manufacturer calls for. That's how the warranty stays valid and the floor stays quiet.
